Hymn Book Pages

A teeny hymn book, only 2.75 x 4.25 inches (7 x 10.5 cm) ...

with pages almost transparent and so lightweight,
that feel so gorgeous with text visible from the reverse giving such an interesting texture...

all packed in bundles of 50, ready for crafty folk to work their magic… to tear or cut, to glue or stitch,
in mixed media, altered books, collage, scrapbooking & other such creative endeavours.

I love to see or hear about the things that people make, but not everyone is willing to share photos with the world. If any followers of my blog would like a selection of book pages to sample, and are prepared to send me photographs of your creations that I can post (and link back to you of course!)
do get in touch…. the first 3 people to email
 suziscribbles [at] yahoo [dot] co.uk
can have a bundle  of pages to play with.

Foxnest

Sometimes you just stumble across something that really resonates, don't you? One of my photographs shared a treasury with the image below recently....

Flying Dreams

The name of this artist is Flora McLachlan & she has a shop on etsy called 'Foxnest'
~I loved it even before I looked any further!

Foxfire

It just keeps getting better... look closely at that central seed-head below....

Shelter from Grey Weather

Flora says,

"In my prints, wild creatures are guarded by thorns and nestled in undergrowth;
the forest is cage and sanctuary. The moon shines silver between the dark trees,
and the scent of leaf-mould contains life and death."

The White Hart

"I have been printing, mostly etching, for thirteen years.
I make pictures of visions I would like to see, using memories and sketchbook studies of familiar woodlands. I'm on a quest for the white hart..."

Some Etsy Sweetness...

I see so many beautiful treasures on Etsy as I wander around there far too much! Danielle, from Joey Design, has just been featured on the Etsy Paper Team Blog... I love her Unicorn Stickers, they're so cute!

She has stickers galore... I think it's the rainbows I'm in love with today....

Chrystal from Craft Studio Paper has this handmade paper in Rainbow shades...

... how gorgeous is that?

What the Postman Brought!

They're old & battered...

...they have broken spines & their covers are stained.
They are literally falling apart with loose & missing pages....

But just look at the colours & textures of the pages in these old french books...
*swoon*

They will be finding their way into the shop after I have had time to savour them a while... most likely packed as bundles of vintage french book pages. If anyone would like a book or two just give me a shout!

These however, have been in my hands for a while...

I am now offering mixed packs of old french dictionary pages
& pages from a french literature school study book.

I thought the combination of words with studies of authors
& poets would complement each other.

You can find them over here

Because I love....

I recently discovered the 'Poetsy' team on etsy... so now i take an occasional diversion creating a treasury based on a favourite poem. (not that i need any more diversions, but it's fun!). This one is based on the Kathleen Raine poem, Amo Ergo Sum. I hope you can see the connection between the  words & work shown... you can see the treasury in full <here>

Because I love
The sun pours out its rays of living gold
Pours out its gold and silver on the sea.

Because I love
The earth upon her astral spindle winds
      Her ecstasy-producing dance.

Because I love
Clouds travel on the winds through wide skies,
Skies wide and beautiful, blue and deep.

Because I love
      Wind blows white sails,
The wind blows over flowers, the sweet wind blows.

Because I love
The ferns grow green, and green the grass, and green
      The transparent sunlit trees.

Because I love
Larks rise up from the grass
And all the leaves are full of singing birds.

Because I love
The summer air quivers with a thousand wings,
Myriads of jewelled eyes burn in the light.

Because I love
The iridescnt shells upon the sand
Takes forms as fine and intricate as thought.

Because I love
There is an invisible way across the sky,
Birds travel by that way, the sun and moon
And all the stars travel that path by night.

Because I love
There is a river flowing all night long.

Because I love
All night the river flows into my sleep,
Ten thousand living things are sleeping in my arms,
And sleeping wake, and flowing are at rest.

My First Treasury

And so... I have benefitted from being included in so many etsy treasuries, that i have at last been spurred into making one of my own. I thought it was going to be a right faff on, but it was really easy. I  think i may have caught the treasury bug... i've already done 3 more. I don't know, more time consumed at the computer, i'm going to have to give myself a schedule, lol.

Paper Passion

I'm not sure when I first loved paper.... i think i've always liked nice notebooks & journals... but as a calligrapher, 'good' paper took on a whole new meaning. To begin with, probably like most people i thought the marbled effect paper from most stationers was pretty posh... but very soon the 'feel' of the paper becomes part of the experience. Smooth 'calligraphy papers' just don't do it for me, and I don't know many calligraphers that go beyond a few night classes who stick to them.

I took over selling paper when someone else at a class stopped & up to that point hadn't experienced any more than Ingres ( for pastels) or Saunders Waterford (for watercolours). Eventually i had so much paper that i ended up opening a shop, but that is another story! At some point i discovered Khadi and I distinctly remember the first order i got from them (http://khadi.com/) Not having a clue what any of their paper apart from basic cotton rag was actually like, i ordered a few sheets of everything. (I had just discovered credit cards, so I could!)

After the stomach churning moment of realising how much it cost, the experience of opening the parcel a few days later was the most exciting, sensual, pleasurable experience I think I've ever had. Honestly. It was a first. But that excitement & pleasure of receiving new unknown paper has never gone away. Even now, going through a pile of paper or a box of paper scraps can send me into a rapturous daze.... dreamily stroking and muttering 'precious...' under my breath

The shop went about 7 years ago & i was able to keep some things in a friends studio... eventually she needed her space back & i brought everything with me in the caravan. Oops. How much 'stuff'? I managed to dispose of so much... trash, charity shops, friends & strangers all benefitted, but i still hung onto the paper.... precious....

I cut it down and keep it under the bed, lifting it all out every time i want some to get my fix. Some of the stuff i have has been discontinued years ago. I'd often buy up the last stocks of papers i knew that I or my students, or other calligraphers would love. Actually i wasn't that bothered about other people, they were my excuse, it was for me really!!

I have realised that i can't keep it there for ever... it is a sacrilege for it not to be used, kept like some zoo animal to be drooled over occasionally (i promise i haven't actually drooled, just salivated a little... ok, a lot) I suppose to many, this may seem like behaviour fit only for an institution, and that the men in white coats should be notified.

I finally started listing some paper packs on etsy, in my suziscribbles shop > suziscribbles.etsy.com You would not believe how many times I changed my mind about this... i took the photos & procrastinated... i put a couple of packs on & waited.... i put a few more on and sold a couple.... and didn't know whether to be pleased or not. How posessive am I? I never get jealous of people. I reasoned with myself that i can always buy more, when i have space... & sold a couple more. I started to let them go with a bit more grace & listed a few more.

I'm looking at these pictures now and thinking "OMG.. I can't get any more of some of that stuff!!" But tough!!! I haven't used it all up in 10 years so someone else can have the chance!

I'm also starting to think that if i sell most of my current stocks, i could maybe buy a bit more to sell. I mean, the paper i need to use most often has already run out & I really NEED to get some. There's none available locally, i've scoured the shops & internet.... what i have found means paying extortionate prices....  it would make sense to get a wholesale batch... wouldn't it?!

There is a link to my suziscribbles etsy shop in this blog side bar, and there is a section for 'paper' on the right in the shop.... but the easy way is to click just <here>  That will take you straight to the precious paper page!

A treasury, a craft fair & business cards needed!

It's raining cats & dogs outside, so perhaps these raspberry pinks will brighten things up a little. I'm hoping this widget from www.craftcult.com will work. I've often wondered how people include a picture of their etsy treasuries.

Treasury making seems to be a big part of the etsy experience, but I haven't made one yet! Both my calligraphy and photography get featured regularly by other people... i always look at their shop when I am featured, so if I made some it would get people looking at my shops too. The thing is, it's too easy to spend time looking instead of doing as it is!!

A group of etsy sellers in the North East of England have got together to organise a craft fair in Seaham on 5th May... I shall be there.... and other uk artists/crafters can be too, in a way... on our Big card Table. All you need to do is send some business cards & a £2 donation.... all the details are here at the keep calm events blog (as in 'keep calm & craft on!)
